Key Characteristics

Gangster Grotesk is strongly inspired by the quirkiness of early 20th century gothic designs. Despite the influence of historical details, many aspects of the typeface — like its closed and tapered terminals, inward curls on letters like C, G, and S, and its striking contrast — create a typeface that is contemporary in its form and execution.

Gangster Grotesk performs best at the edges of the typographic scale spectrum. Set in logotypes and headlines, its unique angles are attention-grabbing and fun to look at. Set in running text, these same elements paired with its slightly condensed width give this sans serif a pleasingly dynamic rhythm, every time it’s read.

SMALL SIZES

14/18 Alphonse Gabriel Capone (New York, 1899 – Florida, 1947) better known as Al Capone, was born in New York City in 1899. He was the son of Italian immigrant parents. Capone began his criminal career in Brooklyn, where he earned himself the nickname Scarface, due to the scars on the left side of his face. In his early twenties, Capone moved to Chicago. There, he became the boss of the Chicago Outfit – and the most prominent crime figure in the city. By the late 1920s, Al Capone was already on the FBI’s most wanted list, although his business card stated that he was an antiques dealer. His seven-year reign as a crime boss finally ended when he was caught and sent to Alcatraz at the age of thirty-three.
